We find ourselves in the vastness of the twenty-first century. Monolingualism is on the decline. Society and relationships function in several languages at once. Gender categories are no longer a defining factor.
We find ourselves in the vastness of the twenty-first century. Monolingualism strikes back. LGBTQI*-free zones are being established. Conservative speech is getting louder.
Which movement prevails?
WI*DERREDEN explores the influence grammatical structures have on social constructs and gender identities and, taking this one step further, examines how multilingualism can become a model for a utopian, queer-feminist society. We meet two Homo Ludens who have already made the transition into a multilingual New Babylon and tell the audience about their journey there. In a dialogue between Polish and German, they discuss the connection between monolingualism and right-wing speech and ask themselves who has the power to change language, all the while balancing on the (not entirely metaphorical) language walls. They find themselves in a constant process of reconstruction and rebuilding. The fluidity of meanings and what can and cannot be said are set against the backdrop of Europe at a crossroads of its social development. Which potential lies in a multilingual diversity of perspectives? The devised play is based on a rewritten version of the Babel story, dramatised newspaper clippings, legal documents and texts from queer literature, linguistics and philosophy.
WI*DERREDEN is an experiment that questions language norms. And encourages us to talk: multilingually, again and again and against!
